Why are we even THINKING about the next generation of consoles already?
Most Gamers would agree that the current generation of consoles are for the most point underwhelming to this point, me included. This does not mean that they wont get better as they continue to mature especially given the "mid cycle refreshes" both consoles would have received by this holiday season. With that in mind you have to wonder why would anyone be even thinking about the next generation of consoles outside of the big 3, oh and Michael Pachter but that is expected when you are the tech equivalent of an oil speculator.
You would have to be crazy and living in denial to think that the big 3 have not started planning out the next gen as soon as the original PS4 and XB1 dropped in 2013 but no one should even think we would see the new systems anytime before holiday 2020/21. I only say this because developers haven't even begun to push the base systems and they now have the extra horsepower of the PS4pro and Xbox1X that will soon be hitting the market provide. These up-spec'd systems will definitely take time to exploit and now that MS is dropping the 1X the developers have more incentive to exploit the power of both of them. This is a good thing for everyone no matter what part of the gaming ecosystem your gaming preference is.
I for one am finally starting to get a bit excited for this generation of consoles, we are finally starting to see developers unleash the hounds so to speak on the gaming world, actual GOOD games are starting to come out developers are starting to show how creative they can be, and we are seeing less of the "me too" first person shooter games coming to market. Games once only capable on a PC are starting to make their way to consoles. Concepts like Cross platform gaming is starting to take hold (yeah we have one hold out but how long do you expect that to last) and now gamers can play their favorite games with their friends regardless of the platform they choose (yeah I know, I know, that dang hold out ! like I said that wont last too much longer). Indie developers are starting to mature with the current systems and show off titles that can rival some from the AAA studios!
Like I said this generation is finally starting to heat up so why are we starting to talk about the next generation of consoles? Why rush the next gen ? Do we really want to start over again ALREADY? Do you honestly think technology has progressed enough to warrant a true generational upgrade ? I for one don't, especially at the prices most console gamers expect to pay for a new console! I am one of the few gamers who really does not mind paying for performance (remember I bought 3 freaking Neo Geo's) but not every 4 years, we don't need the console space become like the mobile phone market, that wouldn't be good for anyone. If you need to upgrade to the most bleeding edge hardware every year then you need a PC, not only do they have the hardware to satisfy your addiction to raw power, that platform has the games to really exploit the tech. If that is not you then you need patience. I say let this generation get more mature before we try to send it to the retirement home. Lets see what the developers can do with the PS4pro and XB1X before we cast them out into obscurity heck lets see if Nintendo pulls a mid cycle refresh of the Switch which could be super surprising especially if they used a USB 3.1 connector with thunderbolt in the current switch, meaning all they would have to do would be add a GPU and memory to a "PRO" Dock device and BOOM! SLI in the console space, this is Nintendo though so they probably kept it simple and cheap by just using a vanilla USB 3.0 controller (you can dream though). So instead of talking about a theoretical PS5 or XB2, lets get to what is important to us as gamers, THE GAMES!
